A north Los Altos homeowner called us for a snake because the line was backing up into the tub. That's the classic sign of a main line blockage: the tub is the lowest drain in the house, so that's where a stopped lateral shows first. Our plumbing service professionals had to remove the toilet to run the cable. We suggested installing a two-way cleanout, so the next time the line slows it can be cleaned from outside, without pulling the toilet and without a backup into the tub first.
It comes up often because so much of Los Altos went up in the 1950s and 1960s, and many were plumbed without an exterior access point. The city's 2017 Sewer System Management Plan says roughly 75% of its sewer system was installed in the 1960s and 1970s, and that most stoppages occur in laterals. Los Altos Municipal Code section 10.04.250 requires a cleanout where the building sewer meets the lateral, and the Building Division standard for new, repaired, or altered building sewers adds an accessible backwater valve with a relief valve, which we fit too.
Sewer cleanout installation on an existing home means finding the lateral outside the foundation, cutting in the fitting, and setting a capped riser in a yard box. If the camera shows the pipe itself is cracked or rooted, a cleanout won't fix it. See sewer camera inspection for the camera and sewer line repair for the pipe.
